On June 2, 2008, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada was established to guide and inspire First Nations peoples and Canadians in a process of truth and healing toward reconciliation and renewed relationships based on mutual understanding and respect. The headquarters are in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
On June 11, 2008, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, on behalf of the Government of Canada, delivered a formal apology in the House of Commons, to former First Nations Residential School students, their families, and communities for Canada's role in the operation of the Indigenous residential schools.
The last school like this was closed in 1996. These government-funded, church-run schools were set up to eliminate parental involvement in the intellectual, cultural, and spiritual development of Indigenous children.
I wrote my original Conciliatory Prayer with very little information about the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Now, my prayer is even stronger after reading the facts on the internet!
